‘Men of Harlech’…all together now! The nation’s unofficial anthem, loved by rugby fans and regimental bands alike, is said to describe the longest siege in British history (1461-1468) which took place here during the War of the Roses. Seven years! It only took that long to build the castle, between 1283 and 1290 to be exact.


 Fairbourne has its own narrow gauge steam railway dating back to 1895 and is just two minute drive away.  You can travel on the train or drive to Penrhyn Point to catch the Passenger Foot Ferry over to Barmouth any day of the week during the Summer.

Just 10 min drive is the Talyllyn steam railway.  

Activate your senses go Walking, Cycling or Fishing

If you feel like getting invigorated you can try climbing the Cadir Idris Mountain Range nearby @ 2927 feet.    If you feel like a more gentle walk visit the magnificent blue lake above Fairbourne you can even take a dip in the icy cold water!  Go fresh water or sea fishing or just throw yourself at any of the adventurous activities which the area has to offer including mountain bike riding at the European award winning tracks of Coed y Brenin and local horse riding, or Go Ape (its great fun for everyone).


Fairbourne has its own 9 hole course just off the beach


Set amidst spectacular mountain backdrops Dolgellau Golf Club is considered to be one of the most beautiful courses in Wales. Do not be fooled by its lack of length, this 9 hole course with alternating tees for the second nine provides a true test of golf for all standards of golfer. Its small & well protected greens will reward a good straight shot and the free draining land means suberb playing conditions can be maintained even in wet weather ensuring year round play.
